Hari is 17, one of the 60,000 Nepalese Sherpas who work for Western tourists, local merchants and families living in the Himalayas. On this trip, he is bringing an old Coca-Cola cooler down a mountain from a village high above the valley. On his back. There is a graphic symbolism in this block of corporate colour moving across the breathtaking landscape. Journey of a Red Fridge is the portrait of a dignified, determined young man who has become a beast of burden to further his dream: to go to school. His story lets the filmmakers contrast the solidarity of traditional village life with the unthinking exploitation practiced by tourists looking for an exotic adventure.
ABOUT AUTHORS In 2005, Lucian and Natasa Muntean founded Lunam Docs (www.lunamdocs.com) - an independent documentary film production dedicated to documentary filmmaking on human rights and social justice, around the world, with special attention paid to children rights and child labor. Their two documentary films include Punam (2005) and Journey of a Red Fridge (2007). The great support and the feedback of the international public to the film Punam, motivated Lucian and Natasa to establish the Punam Fund (2007). The Punam Fund is dedicated to the elimination of and fight against child labour. For the time being, the activities of the Punam Fund are aimed at the children featured in the films Punam and Journey of a Red Fridge, that is to say, about the children that work in the Bhaktapur region in Nepal and the children that work in the Himalayas of Nepal.
