PRESS QUOTE
²Only kids think sex is the prime mover in human affairs. Then they grow up and find out it's money.² ~ Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
"This film is true about human nature. It clearly sees needs and desires. It is not universal, but within its particular focus, it is unrelenting." ~ Roger Ebert
"With barely any sex on the screen, the film suggests more than it shows and, despite its small canvas, is a stylistic coup for the director's low-budget ambitions." ~ David D'Arcy, Screen Daily

SYNOPSIS[ZS1]
Set in the weeks leading up to the 2008 presidential election, The Girlfriend Experience  takes place over five days in the life of an ultra high-end Manhattan call girl who thinks she has her life totally under control. She feels her future to be secure: she runs her own business, makes $2000 an hour, and has a devoted boyfriend who accepts her lifestyle. Yet she fails to realize that when you're in the business of meeting people, you never know who you're going to meet...

Shot in a an artistic cinema verité style, the story's ups and downs are less compelling than the stunningly credible performance of adult film actress Sasha Grey as a determined young woman that has managed to achieve success as an upscale escort without any apparent loss to her dignity, yet clearly has lost the ability to feel anything deeply; be it with her clients or in her own personal life.

Without complication, the film shows us the costs of subduing the aspects of ourselves to get ahead and demonstrates the fraught relationship between our professional lives and our personal lives in the age of post-crisis capitalism.
